MUS520: Topics in Music from 1600 to 1800: Handel: Sources, Editing, and the Imagination

Focusing on selected operas and oratorios of Handel, in particular "Messiah", the seminar focuses on ways of reading 18th-century musical sources by modern editors of critical editions and by earlier musicians, such as Mozart and Mendelssohn. With guest appearances by Malcolm Bruno, the seminar explores how sources might be used imaginatively to reconstruct historical performance practices.
