Instructor(s):
Course Info

We examine the music of the late British composer Jonathan Harvey (1939-2012). His writings on musical inspiration and Buddhist philosophy show that he thought of composition as an act of compassion. We discuss his unique approach to serialism, self-similar structure, aleatory, and melodic chains; and examine how and why the warmth of his lyricism is infiltrated by complex textures.
