MUS545: Contexts of Composition

Course Info

Words and Music looks at composing for voice and instruments, and especially concentrates on the non-operatic voice. We look at various issues, such as the role language plays, the relationship between the more contractual meaning of words and the less concrete semantics of music, and the various ways that singers can embody meaning in the way they deliver both the words and music. I am joined in this endeavor by the renowned sean nos singer, Iarla O'Lionaird, a visiting scholar to the department this semester.
