MUS545: Contexts of Composition: Music and Manifesto

Instructor(s):
Course Info

`Music and Manifesto' examines the idea of writing music to a manifesto. We look at various manifestos and quasi-manifestos, both in music and in the larger art world. Examples include Steve Reich's `Music as a Gradual Process', Sol Le Witt's `Paragraphs on Conceptual Art', and the `Dogme 95 Manifesto' from the filmmakers Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg. Students write two short compositions, one to a manifesto that they craft, and the second in opposition to the same manifesto.
