The goal of Music 104 is to give you a greater ability to handle musical data. This means increased facility with notation, better musical memory, more ability to reconstruct harmonies and tunes, and a greater awareness of the contents and meaning of music theory. In short, a more sensitive and highly refined 'ear'.

There will be about ten weekly assignments, and two major projects. Each of the weekly assignments will involve

Writing
Listening
'Hunting' (finding music that displays certain properties)
Singing

The overall focus of the course will be on song writing, harmonization, and perhaps some arrangement as well. You will write tunes, harmonize them, listen to a variety of pieces and respond to them, hunt for music relevant to the topic at hand and write some of it down, and do a lot of sight-singing from various sources. We will do a lot of singing. (Students these days are not too crazy about singing, but it's one of the best ways to train your ears.)

The final project will be a song that you will write, perform and record with others in the class. We will arrange a recording of everyone's final song.

The class will be divided into precepts, with about twelve in each precept, and each will meet twice a week.
