MUS234: Music of the Baroque

We examine the music of the Baroque period in its cultural context, exploring works by such composers as Monteverdi, Cavalli, Purcell, Bach, and Handel, considering such topics as the birth of opera, the voice of the castrato, the musical consequences of the religious strife, music by and about women, and the rise of instrumental music. The class will also have the opportunity to attend rehearsals and performances of Princeton's production of Cavalli's La Calisto in Music 219.
