MUS534: Ends and Means: Issues in Composition

Course Info

"What if?" tries to understand complex musical surfaces using transcription and transformation. We start by looking at examples from Hans Abrahamsen, Unsuk Chin, Gerard Grisey, Kaija Saariaho and Claude Vivier. The students are encouraged to bring other composers to the table too. The aim is to separate the structural from the ornamental if possible, and to test how far one can transform the material before it loses its basic identity. In this endeavor we isolate strands in the activity and then build them up in combination to figure out the ways in which they work.
