MUS545: Contexts of Composition: Creative Practice in Cultural Perspective: Beyond Misogyny

Course Info

What would artistic experience free of gender bias look like? Can we even imagine it? The charged word "misogyny" invites us to begin by scrutinizing gender-based antipathy in artistic experience. We analyze misogynist content in canonical artworks and ponder the significance (or not) of artists' "offstage" conduct. Then we move "beyond" misogyny to study artists and commentators who dismantle restrictive notions of gender. Moving "beyond" also entails recognition that gender bias affects not only women, but entire communities. With that in mind, we imagine approaches to creative expression free of a gender binary based on dominance.
