MUS548: Creative Practice in Cultural Perspective: Humanity and Dominance in the Arts

Instructor(s):
Course Info

An exploration of the tension between humane and dominant tendencies in the arts. The creative arts are often idealized for their virtue and transcendence, for their ability to enrich and inspire us. However, such idyllic notions deny the ethos of dominance that we sometimes see in artworks and in the arts world. We begin by considering gender bias, then move on to related topics, with significant student input on topics. What would a truly humane arts practice, free of aggression, look like? Can we even imagine it?
