A review of selected theories of African rhythm, including those by Anku, Arom, Locke, Kubik, Nzewi and Toussaint. Each theory is considered from the point of view of its internal structure, the ethnographic data upon which it is based, the extent to which it incorporates indigenous perspectives, and the kinds of pressures exerted on the theorist by the academic culture for which s/he writes. A final presentation on a topic of your choice is required.
