Majoring in Music

The Music Major

The Music Department supports a range of critical, analytical, and creative practices in the study of music. The Music Major is geared primarily toward the study of musicology and composition. Coursework in the Major approaches music as a product of various aesthetic, philosophical, and socio-historic traditions in a range of periods; as a process within diverse socio-cultural contexts; as text available for formal and stylistic analysis; and as a practice of making. Music Majors actively participate in music performance; they frequently integrate performance into their independent academic work, and may pursue Certificates in Music Performance and Jazz Studies.
