A note from Matthew Parrish, Director of Small Group A:
Join the Princeton University Jazz Program’s Small Group A for an evening of captivating music that entertains and showcases the ensemble’s educational mission. The performance opens with the energetic rhythms of “Sister Cheryl” by Tony Williams, setting an exciting tone for the night. We’ll then take you on a journey through the classic “Autumn in New York” by Vernon Duke, evoking the season’s beauty. The program continues with “Buenos Aires,” an original composition by Matthew Parrish. Next, experience a fresh arrangement of the timeless “Long Ago and Far Away” by Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin, skillfully reimagined by Matthew Parrish.
The highlight of the evening is a medley of jazz standards featuring an eclectic mix of pieces: “Evidence” by Thelonious Monk, “Blue Bossa” by Kenny Dorham, and the haunting “Footprints” by Wayne Shorter. The medley also includes the empowering “Power to the People” by Joe Henderson and the intriguing “Dark Knight” by Branford Marsalis. The program continues with “The Summer Knows” by Michel Legrand and concludes with Matthew Parrish’s dynamic “Hail Caesar.” This diverse selection promises a rich and varied musical experience, showcasing the depth and versatility of jazz.
The purpose of this ensemble is to teach practical approaches to performing in a group setting. Students learn to lead a song, play cohesively to create art, and entertain audiences simultaneously.
