The TRENTON YOUTH ORCHESTRA (TYO) is a string orchestra, run by Princeton University students, that serves high school students from Trenton public schools. During weekly rehearsals, TYO members work under the instruction of their coaches to hone their string technique, enrich their musicianship, and develop an understanding of the many nuances of collaborative performance. TYO offers its members free weekly private lessons; field trips to concerts featuring ensembles such as the Princeton University Orchestra; and guest performances from student music groups such as the Princeton Chamber Music Society, Katzenjammers, etc.
At the end of every semester, the orchestra holds a concert in Rockefeller College, and has also performed in Mathey College, Forbes College, and the Lee Performance Room. In the past, TYO has collaborated with members of the Princeton University Orchestra, Sinfonia, Glee Club, Trego Singers, and Pianists Ensemble. Last December, the orchestra gave a special performance for Maestro Gustavo Dudamel as part of his welcome tour of Princeton University. TYO is supported by the Department of Music, the Pace Center for Civic Engagement, and the Dudamel Foundation.
TYO rehearses every Saturday from 10 AM to 12 PM in McAlpin Rehearsal Hall in Woolworth Music Center, followed by private lessons from 12 PM to 1 PM. Princeton students can volunteer for TYO in one of two ways: 1) teaching weekly private lessons to one TYO member, or 2) coaching, which entails attending every other rehearsal to lead sectionals and teaching private lessons to one member. All volunteers receive pedagogy and teacher training from TYO’s Teaching Fellow, Anna Lim, who is also a member of the violin faculty.
We awelcome student musicians and student music groups of all instruments and genres to perform for TYO during one of our rehearsals, followed by a Q&A. And if you are organizing a concert that you think we would enjoy, we accept donations in the form of free tickets!
If you are interested in getting involved, please email TYO Director Lou Chen at email@example.com.
