My work focuses on the state of Orthodox music in fifteenth century Venetian Crete. In particular, I’m interested in how the Greek ecclesiastical offices of the protopapas and protopsaltis played a role in influencing how Orthodox chant was composed, taught, and implemented in colonial Crete. My other musicological interests include Sufjan Stevens and the folk music of the American Midwest. I am endlessly fascinated by issues of mythology and identity (temporary and locally) that folk music likes to explore. During my non-musicological hours, I like to pick up — and put down — heavy, colored circles.
