Three Department of Music graduate students — composition students Gemma Peacocke, Shelley Washington, and recent graduate Emma O’Halloran — will be in residence at the National Sawdust arts institution in Brooklyn, NY for the 2019/20 season, as part of their Kinds of Kings composer collective.
The residency will include four concerts as well as professional development opportunities for early career composers and performers. The collective is also launching the Bouman Fellowship, for which three early career composers have been awarded commissions to write new pieces to be premiered at National Sawdust, along with receiving mentorship from the Kinds of Kings composers. “For the members of Kinds of Kings— distinguished young creators who work in diverse styles—strength in numbers also amplifies their mission of providing visible, vocal support to composers who are underrepresented in conventional concert-music life because of their gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity.” – The New Yorker
