Jazz Ensembles

Led by world-renowned alto saxophonist and composer Rudresh Mahanthappa, the Jazz Program Ensembles at Princeton consist of the Creative Large Ensemble, the Jazz Small Groups, and the Jazz Vocal Collective.  In addition to Mahanthappa, ensemble directors include Darcy James Argue, Ted Chubb, Matthew Parrish, and Miles Okazaki.  Repertoire choices reflect the goal of engaging the grand history of jazz while also exploring its modern forms and approaches.  A visiting artist program regularly brings in prominent practitioners for one-week residencies to conduct workshops, visit ensembles and classes, and perform with students. These have included Archie Shepp, Billy Childs, Theo Beckmann, Gerald Clayton, Danilo Perez, Terri Lyne Carington, and Camille Thurman to name just a few.  In some cases, guests have been commissioned to compose new work that is premiered in concert with students.

These ensembles exemplify the fact that jazz is very much a living art form.
