J.S. BACH: OVERTURE IN THE FRENCH STYLE, BWV 831

This eleven-movement piece was published in 1735, alongside his well-known Italian Concerto. Each movement seemingly has a different character, with the opening “Overture” being quite noble, and the following “Courante” being quite playful. There are truly some rhythmic and melodic intricacies to listen for throughout this piece.

W.A. MOZART: PIANO SONATA NO. 8, K. 310 / 300d

Truly a heart-wrenching piece, this sonata is one of two Mozart sonatas written in a minor key. This work is thought to have transpired following his mother’s sudden death, as can be observed in the dramatic passagework exhibited throughout the first and third movements. The second movement, written in F major, is quite lovely, and provides a reminiscent feeling, perhaps as a form of comfort between the two aching movements.

J. BRAHMS: PIANO QUARTET NO. 3

This piano quartet is also known as the “Werther Quartet” after Goethe’s “The Sorrows of Young Werther.” Though only the third and fourth movements will be performed, the immense lyricism and “sorrow” are still quite present. The third movement opens with a deep and lovely cello solo, contrasting with the sharp but melodic violin solo in the final movement.

Vian Wagatsuma is a native New Yorker and current senior in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department, obtaining certificates in Music Performance, Global Health and Health Policy, and Latin American Studies. She has been studying with Prof. Francine Kay for four years. During her free time, she enjoys reading poetry and exploring new places.
